How to use the number each line

1Paste your text into Lines to number.
2Set Start at, Step and what goes After the number (for example . or ) ).
3Choose Padding and how to treat Empty lines.
4Copy the result from Numbered lines, or switch Action to Remove numbers to strip numbering instead.

Default settings: start 1, step 1, “. ” after the number. The empty line stays empty and isn't counted.

Start number and format

Start at takes any whole number, including 0 and negative numbers. Step sets the gap between numbers: 10 gives 10, 20, 30 (handy for leaving room to insert lines later), and a negative step counts down.

Before the number adds text in front, such as Line or #. After the number is the separator between the number and the text: . , ) , : or - . Type \t for a tab, which puts the numbers in their own column when you paste into a spreadsheet.

Padding and separators

Zeros pads every number to the width of the largest one, so ten lines are numbered 01 to 10 and a thousand lines 0001 to 1000. Zero-padded numbers also sort correctly as text. Spaces right-aligns the numbers instead, which reads well in monospaced code listings. With Zeros and ) after the number, ten lines a to j become 01) a … 10) j.

Skipping empty lines

Empty lines has three choices. Leave without a number (default) keeps blank lines blank and doesn't count them, so a numbered list with gaps stays 1, 2, 3. Number them too gives every line a number, which matches the line numbers in a code editor. Remove them deletes blank lines before numbering.

Removing existing numbering

Switch Action to Remove numbers to strip numbering from the start of lines: 1. , 2) , (3) , [4] , 5: and 6 - are all recognized, including leading spaces. A line must have a space after the number, so “3D printer” is left alone, but a line that starts with a number and a space, such as “2026 was a good year”, also loses its number, so check the result.

Questions about the number each line

Can I start numbering from 0 or 100?

Yes. Type any whole number into Start at; negative numbers work too.

Can I skip blank lines?

Yes. With Empty lines set to Leave without a number (the default), blank lines stay blank and the numbering continues on the next line with text.

Can I remove line numbers?

Yes. Switch Action to Remove numbers. Common formats such as 1., 2), (3) and 4: at the start of a line are removed.
