How to use the word combiner
- 1Under Mode, choose Blend two words or Combine lists.
- 2To blend, type into First word and Second word; ideas appear under Word blends, most natural first.
- 3To combine, paste one word or phrase per line into List A and List B (press Add list for more), and choose a Separator.
- 4Press Copy all or Copy, or Download the list.
Example
First word: breakfast Second word: lunch
brunch breakfunch breanch breach brench
The first five blends. Other pairs from the same engine: smoke + fog → smog, motor + hotel → motel, spoon + fork → spork.
Blend two words into a new word
Blend two words makes portmanteaus by joining the start of the first word to the end of the second. The engine tries three methods and ranks the results:
- Shared letters: where the words share a letter at the join, the overlap is used once (smoke + fog → smog, motor + hotel → motel).
- Sound split: the first consonants of word one plus word two from its first vowel (breakfast + lunch → brunch).
- Plain splices at natural syllable-like boundaries.
The small text next to each idea shows how it was made. Tick Also try the second word first for blends in the other direction.
Combine two lists into every pairing
Combine lists joins every item of List A with every item of List B, in order: A1 + B1, A1 + B2 and so on. With 3 words in A and 4 in B you get 3 × 4 = 12 combinations; a third list of 5 makes 60. The total is shown under the result before anything large is generated.
For combinations of items from a single list, or groups of a set size, use the combination generator; to join lists line by line (A1 with B1 only), use join / merge text.
Separators, order and sorting
Separator sets what goes between the parts: a space for phrases, nothing for compound names and domain ideas (blue + fox → bluefox), a hyphen or underscore for slugs and file names, or any custom text. Both orders adds B + A pairings as well, which doubles the output. Sort results can order the list alphabetically or by length, which helps when you're looking for short names. Prefix and Suffix add fixed text to every line, such as .com.
Keyword lists for SEO and PPC
Put modifiers in List A (buy, cheap, discount), products in List B (running shoes, trail shoes) and locations or qualifiers in List C (online, near me): three short lists give every long-tail variation at once. Paste the result into your ad platform's keyword planner to check which variations people actually search for; this tool only builds the combinations and doesn't know search volumes. For question-style ideas around a single seed, try the keyword ideas generator.
Checking name ideas before you use them
Before you commit to a blended name, search for it to see if a company or product already uses it, check trademark registers in the countries you care about (such as the USPTO or EUIPO databases), and check whether the domain and social handles are free. Say the name aloud too: some blends read well but sound like an existing word, or mean something unfortunate in another language.
