Scrambling letters in each word

Letters in each word shuffles the letters of every word and leaves punctuation, digits, spaces and line breaks where they were, so the shape of the text stays recognizable. With Make every word different from the original ticked, a word is reshuffled until it changes, which is impossible only when all its letters are the same (“aaa”) or it has a single letter.

The shuffle uses your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, so every order is equally likely.

Keeping first and last letters

Middle letters (keep first and last) produces the effect from the well-known 2003 internet text claiming that a Cambridge study showed letter order doesn't matter. Matt Davis of the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge traced the idea to Graham Rawlinson's 1976 thesis at the University of Nottingham, not Cambridge, and points out that jumbled words do slow reading down. Short, familiar words stay easy; long words with many middle letters get hard quickly.

Shuffling word or line order

Word order in each line keeps every word intact and shuffles their order within each line, useful for sentence-reordering exercises. Line order shuffles whole lines, for example a list of quiz questions.

All characters in each line shuffles every character, letters and punctuation alike, the way a string randomizer does. Keep Keep spaces in place ticked to preserve word lengths; untick it to mix the spaces in too. To generate brand-new random strings instead, use the random string generator.

Making word jumble puzzles
