THIS TEXT WAS TYPED WITH CAPS LOCK ON. i noticed too late! the guide to SEO and the web
This text was typed with caps lock on. I noticed too late! The guide to seo and the web
Sentence case. With Title Case the same text becomes “This Text Was Typed with Caps Lock On. I Noticed Too Late! The Guide to SEO and the Web”: the acronym SEO is kept because it stands alone among lowercase words.
Uppercase to lowercase
lowercase turns every capital into a small letter. It works for all alphabets with case, including accented letters (É → é), Greek and Cyrillic, using the same Unicode rules as your browser. Digits, punctuation and line breaks are untouched.
Lowercase to uppercase
UPPERCASE capitalizes every letter. A few letters change length: the German ß becomes SS, as the Unicode rules prescribe. All-caps text is harder to read in long passages and reads as shouting online, so keep it for short labels, headings and acronyms.
Title case vs sentence case
Sentence case capitalizes only the first letter of each sentence and the word “I”, like ordinary prose; everything else becomes lowercase, including names, which you may need to fix by hand in the result. Many style guides, and most interface text, use sentence case for headings.
Title Case capitalizes the main words and keeps short words in lowercase unless they come first or last, or start or end a sentence or a part after a colon: a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, from, in, into, nor, of, on, onto, or, over, per, so, the, to, up, via, vs, with, yet. This follows the common practice of AP and Chicago style; the guides differ on a few words, such as “with” and “from”.
Capitalize Each Word capitalizes every word, small ones included.
Fixing text typed with caps lock on
Choose Sentence case: capitals are lowered and sentence starts are restored. In Title Case, a run of three or more all-caps words is treated as shouting and converted, while a short all-caps word among lowercase words (NASA, SEO, FBI) is kept as an acronym. InVeRsE swaps capitals and small letters, which fixes text typed with caps lock on and Shift held for the capitals (“hELLO” → “Hello”).
Changing case in Word, Excel and code
- Microsoft Word: select text and press Shift+F3 to cycle through lowercase, UPPERCASE and capitalized words.
- Excel and Google Sheets:
=LOWER(A1),=UPPER(A1)and=PROPER(A1)(PROPER capitalizes every word). - Code: camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE split text into words at spaces, punctuation and existing capitals, so
userAccountIDbecomesuser_account_idin snake_case.
For small capital letters that work outside a word processor, use the small caps generator.
