How to use the small caps generator

  1. 1Type your text into Your text.
  2. 2Choose Small caps (capitals kept) for the classic look, or All small caps for even-height text.
  3. 3Check the preview; the note under a style lists any letter Unicode can't convert.
  4. 4Press Copy on the row you want.

Example

Input
Small capitals look elegant
Output
Small caps (capitals kept): Sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘɪᴛᴀʟꜱ ʟᴏᴏᴋ ᴇʟᴇɢᴀɴᴛ
All small caps: ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘɪᴛᴀʟꜱ ʟᴏᴏᴋ ᴇʟᴇɢᴀɴᴛ

The capital S stays full size in the first style, which is how small caps are normally set.

What small caps are

Small capitals are capital letter shapes drawn at about the height of lowercase letters. Typographers use them for acronyms in running text (so NASA doesn't shout), for the first words of a chapter, for names in plays, and for era abbreviations such as ᴀᴅ and ʙᴄ. Text in small caps with a full-size initial capital looks formal and calm, which is why it's popular for bios and headings.

Unicode small caps vs a small caps font

A real small caps font is formatting: the letters underneath are still ordinary a–z, so they can be searched, spell-checked and read by screen readers. Unicode small caps are separate characters, mostly from the International Phonetic Alphabet (ʙ, ɢ, ʜ, ɪ, ʟ, ɴ, ʀ, ʏ) and phonetic extensions (ᴀ, ᴄ, ᴅ, ᴇ). They're the only option where you can't choose a font, such as social profiles, but they aren't words to software, so search and screen readers can't use them.

Letters without a small-cap form

Two letters are awkward. x has no widely supported small capital, so it stays as an ordinary lowercase x, which looks almost the same. q uses “ǫ” (o with ogonek), the usual stand-in in small caps generators. Unicode added a true small capital Q (U+A7AF) in 2018, but few phone fonts include it, so it would often show as an empty box. Digits and punctuation stay unchanged; use the small text generator for tiny digits.

Using real small caps in CSS and Word

For websites and documents, use formatting rather than these characters:

  • CSS: font-variant-caps: small-caps; (or font-variant: small-caps). With fonts that include true small caps, use font-feature-settings: "smcp".
  • Microsoft Word: select the text, press Ctrl+Shift+K (Cmd+Shift+K on Mac), or tick Small caps in the Font dialog.
  • Google Docs: there's no small caps button; use a smaller font size on capital letters, or a font with a small caps style.

To change ordinary capitalization instead, use the case converter.

Where small caps paste correctly

The characters are part of the standard fonts on current iPhones, Android phones, Windows and macOS, so they display in Instagram, TikTok, X, Discord and most chat apps. Some sites reject them in usernames and display names. Because screen readers may read them as phonetic symbols, keep small caps for short decorative text.

Questions about the small caps generator

What are small caps used for?

For acronyms in running text, opening words of chapters, headings, and a refined look in bios and names. They are capital shapes at lowercase height.

Why does the letter q look different?

Unicode's small capital Q is too new to be in most phone fonts, so the tool uses “ǫ”, the common substitute. x stays as a plain lowercase x for the same reason.

How do I use small caps in Word or CSS?

In Word press Ctrl+Shift+K; in CSS use font-variant-caps: small-caps. Both keep the underlying text readable and searchable.

Can screen readers read small caps text?

Unicode small caps often aren't read as words, because they are phonetic symbols. Small caps made with CSS or Word formatting are read normally.
