Choosing icon sizes

An .ico file is a container that holds several images; the program showing it picks the closest size. More sizes means a bigger file but sharper results everywhere.

Each size is scaled down from your image separately, in steps, which keeps edges cleaner than one big jump. Start from an image at least as large as the biggest size you tick; 256 px or more is ideal.

Transparency

Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept in every size, so rounded logos and soft shadows look right on any background. If your PNG isn't square, Fit (transparent edges) centers it on a transparent square; Crop to square trims the longer side evenly instead. JPG input has no transparency, so its background stays as it is.

ICO for favicons vs Windows apps

For a website, a favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px is enough, alongside PNG icons for phones and Google. The favicon generator makes that whole set, including the Apple touch icon and the HTML tags. For a Windows shortcut, folder or app icon, include 256 px: Windows uses it for large icon views and scales it for other sizes. This tool stores every size as a compressed PNG inside the ICO, which Windows has supported since Vista; very old software expecting bitmap-only icons may not read it.

Converting JPG or SVG

JPG, WebP and SVG files are accepted too. JPG has no transparency, so crop it close to the subject first with the crop tool. An SVG is drawn at its own declared size before scaling; if that's small (for example 24 × 24), the 256 px icon will be soft, so render it larger first with SVG to PNG and convert that PNG.
