How to use the HEIC to JPG converter
- 1Press Choose images and select your .heic or .heif photos (you can pick many at once).
- 2Set JPG quality; 90 keeps photos visually identical.
- 3Tick Keep photo details if you want the date taken, camera and location kept.
- 4Press Download on each row or Download all (ZIP).
What HEIC is and why iPhones use it
HEIC is Apple's name for HEIF images compressed with HEVC, the same codec used for 4K video. iPhones and iPads save photos in it by default (the High Efficiency camera setting) because it stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality. The catch is support: Windows needs extra codec extensions from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC, many websites and forms reject it, and most browsers other than Safari can't display it.
This converter uses Safari's built-in decoder where available, and elsewhere a HEIC decoder that runs in your browser and loads only when you add a HEIC file.
Converting in bulk
Select all the photos at once; they are converted one after another and each row shows the result size. Large photos take a few seconds each outside Safari. Download all (ZIP) saves them together with their original names and a .jpg extension.
If your phone has already converted a photo (iPhones often send JPGs when you share or upload, even if the file name still says .heic), the tool detects that the file is really a JPG from its contents and saves it unchanged with a .jpg name, with no second compression.
Keeping EXIF data (date, location)
By default the JPG contains only the picture: date taken, camera model and GPS location are left out, which is safer for photos you'll share. Tick Keep photo details (EXIF: date taken, camera, location) to copy them into the JPG, for example when moving photos into a library that sorts by date. The orientation tag is reset because the photo is already rotated upright. PNG output can't carry EXIF; this applies to JPG only.
Stopping your iPhone saving HEIC
To get JPGs straight from the camera, open Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG (they take more space). To keep HEIC on the phone but get JPGs on a computer, set Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic, and the photos are converted when you copy them over a cable.
