What AVIF is
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses photos very efficiently, often better than WebP and much better than JPG at similar quality, and supports transparency and HDR. Websites increasingly serve AVIF to browsers that support it, so images you save from the web may arrive as .avif files that many editors, office programs and upload forms can't open yet.
Browser support for AVIF
This converter decodes AVIF with your browser's own decoder, so it works where the browser can display AVIF: current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If your browser is too old, the tool says so instead of producing a broken file; update the browser or open this page in another one. Animated AVIF files are converted to their first frame.
Quality settings
Converting re-encodes the image as JPG. Quality 85–92 keeps photos visually identical to the AVIF; the JPG will usually be larger, because AVIF is more efficient. Transparent areas are filled with the color you choose (white by default), since JPG has no transparency. The Preview shows the original and the JPG side by side.
AVIF vs WebP vs JPG
| Format | Strengths | Weak points |
|---|---|---|
| AVIF | Smallest files at similar quality, transparency, HDR | Slow to encode, newer, limited app support |
| WebP | Small files, transparency, wide browser support | Some apps and forms still reject it |
| JPG | Opens everywhere | Larger files, no transparency |
For publishing on the web, AVIF or WebP save bandwidth. For sharing, printing and uploads, JPG is the safe choice. See image formats compared.
