Why convert WebP files

Many websites serve images as WebP because it is usually smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. When you save one, you get a .webp file, and some older image editors, office programs, upload forms and print services won't open it. PNG works everywhere and is lossless, so converting doesn't lose anything further; the PNG is an exact copy of the decoded WebP.

Transparency and animation

WebP supports transparency, and so does PNG, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges are kept exactly. The preview shows transparent areas on a checkerboard.

WebP can also be animated. This converter uses your browser's image decoder, which gives the first frame only, so an animated WebP becomes a still PNG. For a moving image you would need an animated format such as GIF or animated PNG, which this tool doesn't produce.

Batch conversion

Add a whole folder's worth of WebP files at once. They are converted one after another, each row shows the original and new size, and Download all (ZIP) saves them together with their original names and a .png extension. Expect the PNGs to be larger than the WebPs, especially for photos.

WebP to JPG instead?

For photos without transparency, JPG is a better target: it is accepted everywhere and the file stays small. Use the WebP to JPG converter. Choose PNG for graphics, screenshots, logos and anything transparent.
